Now it's a room for playing, and no longer a nursery...

"I call Becca!"

by Sarah // 0 comments // tagged with: annabel, play

Annabel has a toy phone that she keeps in her little purse, and she carts it around on errands. Recently, a favorite activity has been pulling out the phone (yesterday, it kept her busy all the way through Trader Joe's) and "calling" friends. Auntie Becca is apparently her favorite phone friend; she calls Becca about 10 times each day. She pushes the phone buttons, announces, "I call Becca!" and holds the phone to her ear as though listening for a dial tone. After a few seconds, her face lights up and she says, "Hi Becca!"

She then proceeds to have an imaginary conversation with Becca before handing me the phone and insisting, "Mommy, talk Becca!" It's amazing that she isn't even two yet, but she gets such joy from imaginative play.

Other frequent recipients of phone "calls" from the Belle are Memaw, Mary (her babysitter), and Gregg. For some reason, she just loves to talk about - and to - our friend Gregg...

She loves to color...

Annabel loves to color, and her work really reflects an abstract expressionist influence. We'll be talking to galleries soon.

Annabel's New Game

by Sarah // 1 comment // tagged with: play

Annabel and I usually play in our front yard in the late afternoon, before dinner. We live in a large old building with a shady sidewalk out front, and she likes to walk up and down our block looking at the houses, passing dogs, etc. Recently, she has developed a new strategy for attempting to explore without all those bothersome motherly restrictions ("Annabel, we don't pick up cigarette butts; they're icky." "Annabel, we don't climb into the neighbor's hostas. " "Annabel, please do not eat that dirt.")

After I tell her to stop something, she'll look up at me, think for a minute, and then announce, "Mommy! Sit!"  She'll grab my hand, walk with me back to our front steps, sit down, pat the step, and say again, "Mommy! Sit! Sit!" As soon as I sit down, she hops up, takes off down our walk, and says, "Bye!"
